Scones are one of my absolute favorite things to serve with coffee or tea. They are perfect for breakfast, brunch, and especially when you need a little afternoon pick me up. When you add espresso powder and coffee extract to the scone dough, and more coffee extract into a mouthwatering glaze to drizzle over the top, they are transformed into the most decadent treat that no one can resist! And seriously, who doesn't love to eat and drink their coffee?

These scones are impressive enough to serve to guests during the holidays, but are also simple enough to make that you can have them anytime you please. Weekend breakfast with the family? Check. Having afternoon tea with the ladies? Check. In the mood to treat yourself to something special? Double check!

I used some of my favorite products to make these scones - Nielsen-Massey Pure Vanilla Extract, Pure Coffee Extract, and Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Sugar. I've been a huge fan of Nielsen-Massey for years and am constantly using their products in my cooking and baking. I couldn't have been more excited when they recently sent me a beautiful gift basket that also included some delicious McCrea's Candies caramels. These rich and decadent caramels make perfect gifts for the holidays, or just to have in your candy jar to share with friends and family. (Or just hide them and enjoy them yourself! Not that I would know anything about that...)

Now, let's make some scones...

Coffee Cream Scones with Coffee Glaze
Author: Sarah Bates | The Chef Next Door
Makes 8 scones

Ingredients:
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon espresso powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 Tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
3/4 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon Nielsen-Massey Pure Vanilla Extract
1 teaspoon Nielsen-Massey Pure Coffee Extract

For the glaze:
1 cup powdered  sugar
2 Tablespoons Nielsen-Massey Pure Coffee Extract
2 teaspoons milk
Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Sugar, for sprinkling

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, espresso powder, baking powder and salt. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender until the mixture is combined. Whisk the cream and extracts together and add it to the dry ingredients. Fold in until incorporated, and then use your hands to work it together into a ball of dough. Be careful not to overwork the dough.

Transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet and form into a 3/4-inch round. Refrigerate the dough for an hour before baking.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Slice the dough into 8 triangles and spread apart slightly on the baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of one of the scones comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool before glazing.

To make the glaze, whisk together the sugar, coffee extract and milk until smooth. Spoon the glaze over the scones, then sprinkle generously with the vanilla sugar. Allow the glaze to set for a few a minutes before serving.
