Turkey Joes {Meat Month}

Turkey Joes {Meat Month}

I posted my favorite sloppy joe recipe awhile back and recently revamped it a bit. Using lean ground turkey and adding a few more spices for additional flavor, the joes turned out wonderful. Healthy and hearty, which is just the way we like it.

This dish is also super quick to make so it's perfect for a weeknight dinner when the kids are starving and demanding food. Oh, your kids don't do that? Huh, mine do. Maybe it's because I have two growing teenage boys. :)

Turkey Joes
Recipe written by The Chef Next Door

Ingredients:
1 Tbsp canola oil
1 shallot, finely chopped
½ green bell pepper, finely chopped
1 lb. lean ground turkey
1 1/4 cups tomato sauce
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tsp chili powder
1 tsp garlic powder
Dash or two of red pepper flakes
Salt and pepper, to taste
Cheddar cheese slices
Sandwich buns

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add shallot and green pepper and cook until soft, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add turkey and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon into small pieces. Add the tomato sauce, Worcestershire, spices, salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 10 minutes.

Turn your broiler on high. Open the buns and lay them on a sheet tray. Spoon some of the joe mixture on the bottoms of your buns and lay a slice of cheese on top of that. Put the tray in the oven for 3-4 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the buns are slightly toasted.

Bon Appetit!
