Reid Dairy Farm Tour Recap & A Giveaway!

Reid Dairy Farm Tour Recap & A Giveaway!

A few weeks ago I had an amazing opportunity to tour the Reid Dairy Farm in Jeddo, Michigan with the United Dairy Industry of Michigan (UDIM). What a wonderful trip it was! I met some amazing new friends and learned so much about dairy farms as well as dairy in general.

Jim and Pam Reid, along with their son Jeff, care for 220 cows and an additional 190 calves and young cows. The Reids started their dairy farm back in 1978 with just 50 cows. They feed their cows with the crops they grow, including 150 acres of hay, 450 acres of corn, 100 acres of wheat and 400 acres of soybeans. The Reids also enjoy educating the public about dairy farming and have over 1,000 people tour their farm each year.

“Possibility and innovation excite me. It’s important to recognize everything that matters and improve it for the next person in your shoes.” – Jim Reid

The Reids do as much as they can to make their farm sustainable. They installed 96 solar roof panels that harness energy for the farm. Each panel produces 205 watts of electricity and help reduce annual electricity costs on the farm by about 30 percent.  The cows’ bedding is made of pure Michigan sand, a natural material that results in increased cow comfort and higher milk quality.  Water is recycled on the farm for use as a soil nutrient, cooling water (used to cool milk quickly to 40 degrees F) and for cleaning the milking parlor. This is only a few of their sustainability practices!

The Reids took us on an extensive tour of their farm. We were able to see where and how the cows are milked, where the milk is stored, the different barns where the cows live, and we even had the opportunity to see a tanker truck in action as it came for pick up!

My favorite part of the tour had to be seeing all the baby calves. They were absolutely adorable and kept wanting to lick our hands! Some of them were as young as a week old.

It was a fabulous day getting to visit the farm, meet the Reids, and learn so much about their beautiful farm. You have an opportunity to visit a dairy farm too with the Breakfast On The Farm events. These events take place all over the state during the summer and would be a great outing for your family! The breakfasts are free and run from 9am - 1pm with breakfast ending at noon. To celebrate National Dairy Month, Michigan Dairy News Bureau and UDIM have graciously provided me with a giveaway for my readers.

  1. Just look at those sweet things! I love cows. There is a place we pass on the way to my parent's and you can see all the babies after they are born. Melts my heart watching them get fed with those big milk bottles and trying to stand up/fall down.

Sounds like a great experience you had.

  2. How cool it is to learn new things, especially when it comes to food, I love milk and I have my own dairy products store. I attract my clients with cool advertising and take and edit the photos myself. depositphots.com thanks to this service, I can enlarge photos without losing quality.
