Meaty Pasta Sauce

Meaty Pasta Sauce

A few backs I discovered a fantastic recipe for meaty pasta sauce made in the crockpot. For those of you that don't know, I LOVE Italian food. Pasta makes me happy! I've tried making my own sauce before but the recipes I've tried just haven't cut it. Some tasted like straight up tomatoes, others were too watery. Finally I have the found the perfect meat sauce! It is literally amazing and so stinkin' simple to make. Once the sausage and fresh veggies are cooked up, everything gets tossed into the crockpot and simmers all day. Yum! I made a few small tweaks to the original recipe but I think they only made the sauce better. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
2 lb bulk Italian pork sausage
1 large onion, chopped
8 oz. sliced fresh mushrooms
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 can (28 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained
2 cans (15 oz each) tomato sauce
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
1 tablespoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Directions:
Spray 5-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. In 12-inch skillet, cook sausage, onions, mushrooms and garlic over medium heat about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sausage is no longer pink; drain.

Spoon sausage mixture into cooker, and then stir in remaining ingredients. Cover; cook on Low heat setting 7 to 8 hours. Serve over hot cooked pasta.
