Grilled cheese and a juicy burger combined? YES! These Grilled Cheese Angus Burgers with
Caramelized Onions are flavorful, hearty, and perfect for your next summer BBQ!
I love a good, juicy burger, and so do my boys. One thing I’m trying to do more of is to make different burger recipes. Not just a traditional burger or slider with your favorite toppings, but something a bit out of the box. I like to be creative, but I also need to be sure it’s something my kids will eat as well. My oldest has a palate like mine and will try anything, but my youngest is picky.
Luckily for me this burger creation was loved by both kids. I mean, this is a pretty fabulous burger, if you ask me. Two of my favorite things – grilled cheese and cheeseburgers – are combined to make one amazing dish. Topped with some melt-in-your-mouth caramelized onions, this meal is pure perfection.
There are a few steps to get these burgers on the table but don’t let that stop you from making them. I caramelized the onions and grilled the burgers at the same time – I then assembled and cooked them all at once on a big griddle. Dinner was ready in no time.

7 Tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
1 small onion, thinly sliced into rings
4 Omaha Steaks Private Reserve Angus Burgers
8 slices Texas Toast
4 slices Colby Jack cheese
4 slices Havarti cheese
Add 3 tablespoons of the butter to a medium skillet and melt over medium heat. Once melted, add the sliced onions and gently mix to coat them all in butter. Turn the heat to medium-low and allow the onions to cook, stirring frequently, until they are tender and golden brown. It will take 15-20 minutes. When the onions are done, transfer to a bowl and allow to cool slightly.
Preheat the grill. Alternately, you can use a grill pan on the stove. Spray the pan with non-stick cooking spray and preheat on high heat. Place the patties on the grill (or grill pan) over medium heat and cook for 8-10 minutes, turning once, until they reach desired doneness. Let the burgers rest until cool enough to handle.
Lay out four slices of the Texas toast. Place a piece of both of the cheeses on each of the slices. Add a burger onto each one, followed by a spoonful of the caramelized onions and a few pickle splices. Cover each with the remaining slices of Texas toast.
Preheat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the skillet. Spread butter onto both sides of each prepared burger. Place the burgers in the pan and cook until golden brown on the first side and the cheese has melted. Flip over and cook until the second side is golden brown. Cut the burgers in half and serve with potato chips or fries.
