Homemade Taco Seasoning

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Hello!! Have you missed me? I know I've missed you! I'm sorry I haven't been around lately. For starters I had a bad tooth with an infection and had to have a root canal last week. That was no fun, but I survived.

Then my oldest son got the flu.

And then the younger one got a virus.

So most of this week I've had kids home with me and I've been trying to balance taking care of them with working. That is not an easy task!

Anyway, I'm getting back into the swing of things and trying to maintain my regular schedule. I have many posts to share with you, but today I decided to start with something easy.

We eat a lot of Mexican food around here as it's one of our favorite cuisines. For years I've been using prepackaged taco seasoning and I finally decided to make my own homemade version. It tastes so much better and is so much healthier since you can control the amount of salt you use.

I found a great recipe on AllRecipes.com and basically tripled it so that I have some on hand for all of our taco and nacho nights. I swear it only takes about 5 minutes to put it all together!

Ingredients:
1 Tbsp chili powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp paprika
1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp black pepper

In a small bowl, mix all of your spices together well. The recipe above will yield about 2 3/4 tablespoons of seasoning. As I mentioned, I tripled this recipe and stored it in a glass container. Any type of container is fine as long as it is covered tightly.

When ready to use, scoop out about 2 tablespoons of the taco seasoning for every 1 pound of meat. You can use more or less depending on your preference. Brown your meat and drain off the fat, then add your taco seasoning and 1/2 cup of water. Simmer and stir until water is absorbed.

Bon Appetit!
